Buying audio

This sections describes the process of creating an assignment and buying audio in detail. Hopefully the process is designed in such way that you don’t need to read this text, but if you get stuck, have questions or just want to know it all, then this is good reading for you.

Creating an assignment

Since this is a market place for custom made audio there is no audio for sale here before a buyer has requested it to be created. If you are looking for custom made audio your first step is is to create an assignment. Simply click the “Get audio here” button on the first page or click this link .

Sign in or sign up

If you are a new user, the first step will be to create an account. The only mandatory information you need to provide is an email address where we can reach you, a password that you want to use to access your account and a display name to be used in communication with other users. If you already have an account but aren’t signed in you can sign in using the panel in the top right corner. If you are signed in you will start at step 2 with describing the assignment.

Top » Buy audio help

Describe assignment

The second step is to provide a description of your assignment. You can select from four main categories and depending on your choice there will be a number of different mandatory fields.

Three fields are always mandatory and they are title, description and pay. The description field should contain the all important information a seller would need to know before recording your audio. If you have external files that you want to attach to your assignment you get to do that at the last step. The pay field lets you choose if you are offering money or not for this assignment. If you choose to offer money, which of course is recommended in order to receive more and better audio recordings, the minimum price is 10 USD. The price you set here will be displayed to potential sellers. The total price for you to pay, currently including a fee of 15%, is calculated and displayed to you. If you can’t afford to pay for the assignment you can choose to specify some other non financial reimbursement, like an official credit somewhere or a copy of the finished audio product you are making.

If you have a strict deadline to meet you can enter a deadline date to inform potential sellers that you need your audio before this date. The assignment status is not affected by this and will hence stay open even if the deadline expires.

Only the mandatory fields and the optional deadline are initially displayed on the screen. To see all available options you can click the “+ Show more options...” link at the bottom of the page where you describe your assignment. If these options are not important for your assignement, or if you don’t know what to choose we suggest that you leave them blank. Like mentioned before, depending on what you want to buy (vocals, instrument, voice over or other audio service) we will ask you to provide different information.

Top » Buy audio help

Vocals

If you want to buy vocals you always need to select a language for the seller to sing in. Besides the language there are several other optional things you can choose to specify to further define you vocals assignment. Perhaps the most important of those is the voice gender, which can be male, female or any of the two. If you do not specify the gender it gets the default value of any.

You can also specify which musical style the vocals should fit. This could be handy if you need vocals for a more specialized musical style like reggae or metal. There are several voice characteristics you can specify if you want which give you the opportunity to specify perceived age, depth, brightness, clarity, strength and perceived age of the voice.

If specifying language isn’t enough you can also specify the accent or dialect in an open text field, but be careful that you spell correctly. So, if you are trying to produce a Post-Britpop song (why not?) you might want to choose English as language and type ‘Brittish’ in the field labelled “Accent or dialect”. If you want a voice impersonation for your vocals you can simply type the name of that person in the field labelled “Voice impersonation”.

Top » Buy audio help

Voice over

If you want to buy voice over you always need to select a language for the seller to speak in. Besides the language there are several other optional things you can choose to specify to further define you voice over assignment. Perhaps the most important of those is the voice gender, which can be male, female or any of the two. If you do not specify the gender it gets the default value of any.

If you need the voice to match a certain age you can choose one or several ages from “Just born”, “Child”, “Teenager”, “Adult”, “Mature”, “Almost dead”. There are more voice characteristics you can specify for your voice over assignment. They give you the opportunity to specify depth, brightness, clarity, strength and perceived age of the voice. But if, for example, the voice brightness is not important to you, you should not specify it as normal since that will exclude bright and dark voices. Instead you should leave it blank.

If specifying language isn’t enough you can also specify the accent or dialect in an open text field and be careful that you spell correctly. So, if you are targeting an European market with your voice over you might want to choose English as language and type ‘Brittish’ in the field labelled “Accent or dialect”. If you want a celebrity recording your voice over you can either try to cough up a million dollar or you can fill in the voice impersonation field on your assignment with any famous person you want, like ‘Barack Obama’ or Clint Eastwood ’.

Instruments

It is possible to select multiple instruments for one assignment but if you need them all and you suspect that it is unlikely that one seller can play them all you should probably create multiple assignments. If you want someone playing acoustic guitar, and you don’t care of it is a steel string or a nylon string guitar you can choose both instruments. For an instrument assignment you can also specify which musical genre the seller should master in order to be a good match.

Select an instrument by typing parts of its name in the text field and click on one of the suggested alternatives in the listbox below. If you want an instrument from a specific country you can try typing the name of that country in English, e.g. typing “sweden” will list ‘nyckelharpa’ which is a traditional Swedish instrument.

We have added all instruments described in wikipedia to this list so unless if what you are searching for is really exotic it should be listed. It is of course possible that you are looking for an instrument, acoustic or electronic, that we haven’t listed yet. In that case, simply type the complete name of the instrument in the textfield and select it from the list below. It will say “new” within parentheses to indicate that this is a new instrument and can be matched against sellers that have added the same instrument in their profile. If you think that this instrument belongs in the standard list please drop us a line.

Other audio service

This category can be used for requesting any audio service you can think of. There are a few predefined subcategories to make matching with potential sellers easier. The subcategories are likely to change in the near future as we get more user feedback, but are for now: “Create a beat”, “Record a real sound”, “Create or record imaginary sound”, “Master”, “Mix / Remix”, and “Create sound logo”.

If what you need doesn’t fall within these subcategories you can type the name of the service you are looking for in the text box “Other service”. If you think that this service should be a standard subcategory please drop us a line.

If the audio service you want is related to music you can also specify which musical genre(s) the seller should be in to. Choosing musical style is optional and found under the “+ Show more options...”.

Top » Buy audio help

Upload attachments

The last step in creating an assignment is optional and gives you the opportunity to upload any files that might help the seller to fulfill the assignment. It is currently not possible to upload files larger than 110 MB.

Top » Buy audio help

Type of files

Depending on your choice in the previous step you will be presented with different alternatives for uploading your files. You need to select which type of file to upload before you can choose the actual file. There are several different types for different purposes:

Playback audio

You always have the possibility to upload playback audio. Playback audio is the audio to which the requested audio must fit. For instance, if you need a guitar solo for a song you made, the playback audio should contain the song (or part of the song) without the solo so that the seller can play this audio while recording the one you requested. Another example of playback audio can be the background audio or music for a voice over assignment.

Supported formats: mp3

Top » Buy audio help
Sound to be modified

If the audio service you need involves modifying existing audio you can upload those files as “Sound to be modified”. For instance, if you need someone to mix or make a remix of a song you recorded you can upload the files involved here. If you want to upload high quality audio files that are larger than 110 MB, we suggest that you try to compress them (zip/rar) and or split them up into several smaller files.

Supported formats: mp3, wav, zip, rar

Top » Buy audio help
Sheet music

If the audio service you need is music related you can upload the sheet music (including chords and tablature).

Supported formats: docx .doc .rtf .txt .pdf .gif .png .bmp .jpg .pict

Top » Buy audio help
Manuscript

If you want to buy voice over, you normally submit a text that should be read, aka the script. It is possible to put this script in the description field of the assignment itself but if you have the script nicely formatted in an existing document you can upload it, or a attach screenshot of it, here.

Supported formats: docx .doc .rtf .txt .pdf .gif .png .bmp .jpg .pict

Lyrics

This probably don’t need much of an explanation. Choose this type if you want to upload lyrics for the assignment.

Supported formats: docx .doc .rtf .txt .pdf .gif .png .bmp .jpg .pict

Requested melody or style

If you want to buy music related audio you can select this type to further describe and exemplify what you are looking for. For instance, you can upload a piece of music that exemplifies the style and sound of the requested audio, or you can upload the melody that you request for an instrument or vocals assignment by exemplifying it with another instrument or singing it yourself.

Supported formats: .mp3

Managing your assignments

You can create as many assignments as you want. Once an assignment has been created it will be listed and searchable for potential sellers under the “find assignments” section. Your assignment will also be automatically matched against potential sellers and the ones with matching profiles will be notified and encouraged to submit the requested audio. Sellers will compete against each other by means of speed of delivery and the quality of the delivered audio. It is very possible that you receive multiple recordings from different sellers and you can use the preview functionality to choose which one to buy. After you have made your decision and paid for a received recording you will get instant access to the full quality audio file(s).

Besides explaining how to preview and buy, this section also describes how to communicate with potential sellers and how to modify, close and delete an assignment.

Top » Buy audio help

Account » Assignment » received audio

Everything you need to manage your assignments and received audio recordings is accessible via your account’s main overview page. This page will list and link to all the assignments you have created. Per assignment page you in turn have access to all information and functionality needed to manage that assignment, including a list of all the received audio. Each received audio has its own page where you can preview and buy or decline the received audio recording.

Top » Buy audio help

Receiving audio

Once your assignment is online you don’t have to take any actions in order to receive audio proposals. You will be notified by email as soon as you have received a recording or if there are other activities you should react to, like a message from a potential seller.

Top » Buy audio help

Previewing received audio

When you receive an audio recording the notification email sent to you will contain a link to the page where you can preview and manage the received audio. This page can also be accessed by logging in to your account, clicking on the corresponding assignment and from the assignment page clicking the green “Preview audio” button for the received audio.

The page for the received audio will list preview versions of all files that were submitted. You can preview them by clicking the play button or downloading the preview file(s) as mp3. It is important to know that the preview versions contain a watermark in the form of very short passages of silence within regular intervals. If the quality, besides from the normal and to the human ear barely noticeable decrease associated with the mp3 encoding, does not match your expectations you should not buy it. Besides the mp3 encoding vs CD quality wav the only difference between the preview version and the full quality version is this watermark.

The received audio page will also show who submitted the audio, with a link to the seller’s user profile page, and possibly a message from the seller.

Top » Buy audio help

Buying or declining

When you have previewed the received audio you should take the decision to buy or decline the audio, or in the case of an assignments without a financial reimbursement simply accept the audio given to you. To buy the audio you simply click the green button “Buy this audio” and you will be redirected to paypal where you can complete the purchase by either using a paypal account or paying with your credit card. After a successful payment you will be redirected back to the received audio page where you can download the full quality audio as wav files. Once you bought or accepted free audio the seller has agreed that the complete and global copyrights now belongs to you (as specified in the User Agreement and Privacy Policy.).

Please note that your assignment will be automatically closed to prevent other sellers from continuing to record and submit audio in vain. This in turn means that any remaining audio recordings received for this assignment that were open at the time will automatically be declined.

If you don’t want to buy the audio you should click the decline button and possibly leave a message to the seller to thank him or her for the effort. If you think that the received audio was good but needs some smaller modifications you can ask the seller to try again by writing this and your comments in the message.

Regardless if you buy, accept free or decline the received audio we encourage you to give the seller a fair rating from 1 to 5 where 5 is the best.

Top » Buy audio help

Communicating with the potential sellers

We encourage you to be as clear and exhaustive as possible in your assignment description but even with the best described assignments potential sellers might still have questions. The sellers can post questions about specific assignments using the message board on the assignments public page. You also have a message board on the page where you manage your assignment and you can use that to reply to comments and questions and also to post additional information that you think is relevant for potential buyers. Be aware that this is a public message board so all the potential sellers can see each others questions and your answers.

The defaults settings are that you are notified by email as soon as you have received a new post on the message board.

View, modify, close and delete an assignment

If you want to see how your assignment looks from the eyes of your potential sellers you can go to your assignment page (from your account overview) and click the “View” button in the bottom panel labelled “Manage this assignment”.

From this panel you can also click the “Modify” button to make changes to your assignment. The process of modifying the assignment is identical to creating it except for the fact that you are not allowed to lower the price. However, you are allowed to increase the price, which is what you would want to do if you aren’t receiving any audio recordings.

When you accept a received audio recording the assignment will be closed automatically but if you for some reason would like to close your assignment before that you can click on the “Close” button. All received and still open audio deliveries will be declined. A closed assignment cannot be opened again.

If you want to delete your assignment you can click on the “Delete” button. This will first close the assignment and then permanently delete it. After this you will no longer be able to access any of the audio received.

Payments via paypal

We use paypal to pay the sellers and once you signed up for an account we will ask you to give us your paypal email address so that we can pay you once you start earning money. If you don’t have a paypal account, no worries. You can easily, and free of charge, open a paypal account today or you can let us do it for you as we send you your first payment. In the later case, all we need is an email address for you that you would like to use for your paypal account. This is how it works:

Within 24 hours after a successful sale the seller will receive an email notifying him/her of the payment. There are three scenarios for the payment recipients.

  • Recipients with a PayPal account tied to the email address that contains the payment notification can click a link in the email message, log in to their account, and access their payments.
  • If the recipients have a PayPal account, but the payment is sent to an email address that is not tied to their account, they are offered an opportunity to log in to their account. Then, when they log in, the money is deposited to their account and the new email address is added to their account automatically.
  • If the recipients do not have a PayPal account, their email message contains a link that directs them to a PayPal sign-up page. The sign-up process automatically confirms their email address. When they complete the sign-up process, the money is available in their new PayPal account.

You can always change your paypal email address under “My account > Settings“.

Create a public profile

Your profile is foremost used to automatically find you matching assignments, but it also gives you the opportunity to present a short introductory text of yourself. When a buyer, or any anyone for that matter, looks at your user page your profile will be displayed together with your ratings. There are four main categories you can choose from when describing what you can offer but you are not limited to selecting just one of them. The categories are vocals, instruments, voice over and other type of services. Depending on which categories you choose you will be asked to enter different information. The more information you specify the better chance you run at being matched with interesting and suitable assignments.

Vocals

If you want to provide vocals (i.e. normal singing, rap, opera etc) you need to select at least one language in which you can perform in but you can choose as many languages as you actually manage. For vocals you will also need to select gender.

Besides the mandatory language and gender there are several other optional things you can choose to specify to further define your vocals. You can specify which musical styles you are most comfortable with and there are several voice characteristics you can specify in order to describe your voice. There is room to improve how the voice is classified but for now you get the opportunity to specify perceived age, depth, brightness, clarity, strength and perceived age of the voice.

If you have a clear accent or dialect you can specify which one by typing the name of it in “Accents or dialects”. You can specify several by separating them with comma signs but be careful that you spell correctly, e.g. brittish, jamaican, american.

If you can sing like a famous person, like Elvis for instance, you should add that to your profile by typing the name of that person or persons in the field labelled “Voice impersonation”. You can specify several persons by separating their names with comma signs but be careful that you spell correctly, e.g. elvis, bob dylan

Intsruments

You can add as many instruments as you want to your portfolio, given that you actually can play them.

Some popular instrument, like the guitar, are listed several times for slightly different versions and usage e.g. “Acoustic nylon guitar”, “Acoustic steel guitar”, “Classical guitar”. So if can play classical guitar and have access to both the acoustic nylon and steel stringed guitar you should select all three alternatives.

We have added all instruments described in wikipedia to this list so if what you play is not too exotic it should be listed. But it is of course possible that you can offer an instrument, acoustic or electronic, that we haven’t listed yet. In that case, simply type the complete name of the instrument in the text field and select it from the list below. It will say “new” within parentheses to indicate to you that this is a new instrument and can when saved be matched against assignments that request the same instrument. If you have indicated that you can play an instrument you can also specify which musical styles you are most comfortable with.

Voice over

If you want to do voice over you need to select at least one language that you master and we also want you to tell us your gender to better match you with incoming assignments.

There are several other optional characteristics you can choose to specify to further define what kind of voice over you perform.

If you can mimic or impersonate a famous person, like Barack Obama or Clint Eastwood, you should add that to your profile by typing the name of that person or persons in the field labelled “Voice impersonation”. You can specify several persons by separating their names with comma signs but be careful that you spell correctly, e.g. barack obama, clint eastwood. The names are case insensitive.

Finding assignments

Finding interesting assignments can be done by creating a profile and letting us automatically search for assignments matching your skills but you can also search and browse our assignment database yourself.

Top » Sell audio help

Automatic matching and notification

With your profile in place we will start monitoring all new assignments created and send you an email you as soon a matching assignment is put online. We will also match your profile against open existing assignments and list them in the panel “Best matching assignments” under your account overview.

There are two modes that can be used for the automatic matching. The default is a less strict approach which only matches on mandatory fields. Since optional fields like musical style, age of voice etc are ignored this mode generates more matches. The second option is a stricter mode, called surgical, where we use all available fields in the matching process, meaning that if an assignment has filled in that the voice should be mature, and your profile says that you have a teenager voice, you wont be matched with that assignment. However, if the assignment is asking for a mature voice, and your profile doesn’t say anything about the age of your voice (voice age is optional) you will still be matched since you might have a mature voice.

The matching mode can and email notification settings can be changed under My account > Settings.

Browsing and searching

Before computers, humans had to search and match by hand to find what they were looking for. The audio market support this cultural heritage and for this reason, and since not everything can be automatically matched, we offer the possibility for you to manually browse trough and search for assignments. The browse and search is available under the main menu “Find assignments”.

You can browse through all assignments or per category and filter on the status of the assignments (“open”, “assigned”, “closed”). You can also use category specific filters by first selecting a main category and thereafter click the “more options” link. The category specific filters lets you filter on the fields that are mandatory for that type of assignment. The instrument filter is a bit of a special case where we have tried to classify all the worlds instruments in a two level taxonomy that should be easy for everyone to use. This is not only more or less impossible, but also very time consuming so therefore the classification is not 100% complete... but it might be one day.

And of course, what would a database be if you couldn’t search for it. The search is case insensitive and searches on whole words, which means that ‘elect’ won’t find assignments for electric guitar, but both ‘electric’ and ‘guitar’ will. You can search on everything in an assignment except the free text description field and the attachments. So if you would like to find all the assignments posted by the buyer named ‘MrPayAlot” you can simply type ‘mrpayalot’ in the search field and hit enter. The search is combined with any filter on main categories and its specific filters.

Besides the description filled in by the buyer you can view the status, who the buyer is, any attached files and when this assignment was last modified. On this page you can also contact the buyer and of course, choose to deliver audio.

Buyer rating and score

When you click on the buyer name you will see the buyers user page and on the right side you have the rating and score of this buyer. It is possible that this is a first time buyer or that he or she hasn’t been rated yet. Each seller that has done business with the buyer has gotten the chance to rate the buyer from 1 to 5 with 5 being the best rating. Each time a buyer is rated the total score is increased by the given rate. A low average rating with a higher total score is not good and means you might want to contact the buyer or look at previous assignments for more information before you get started on the assignment.

Posting questions and comments

If you have questions or comments about the assignment you can post a message using the “Contact buyer” message board at the bottom of the assignment page. Messages posted here should relate to this specific assignment and will be visible for everyone to view, since this is an open and shared forum for the buyer and all the potential sellers. The rationale behind this is that it is likely that your question or comment, and the buyers reply to it, is relevant for the other potential sellers as well. You will be notified when the seller replies to your message (when depends on your notification settings). You can also post replies to messages from the buyer or other potential sellers.

The third step is to attach a message to the buyer, which is optional, and simply click the “Submit” button.

Record or edit audio files locally

Most people that have an interest in audio and audio recording use some locally installed software, often referred to DAW (digital audio workstation), to record and edit sound. Examples of such software are “Studio logic” or “GarageBand” from Apple and Cubase from Steinberg. There are also more rudimentary software like the on windows preinstalled Sound recorder. Independent of which software or hardware your use to record there are two things to keep in mind. Supported format and size of the files.

Top » Sell audio help
Supported formats

The current version of theaudiomarket.com requires you to submit your audio in the file format “.wav” (Waveform Audio File Format ) with a 16 bits resolution. If you use the Windows preinstalled Sound recorder it will by default record and save audio in this format. The 16 bit .wav is, if you record in stereo with 44,100 samples per second, equivalent to standard CD quality.

The maximum file size for uploading is currently 110 MB. If you need to upload a file longer than that you should split it up in multiple files.

Use the online recording tool

theaudiomarket.com offers an online recording tool for those who do not want to bother with complex DAW software or the encoding of the audio. Our online recording tool has limited functionality but is very easy to use and gets the job done for simpler recordings.

The recording tool has 3 main buttons, one for recording, one for stopping and one for playing. It’s dead simple, but before you can use it you must choose a microphone to use. If you don’t know which microphone to use you should select “Default microphone”. After selecting you need to grant the Adobe flash player access to this microphone by clicking the small “Allow” button that appears. You then need to make some noise so that we can verify that the microphone is working properly. If your microphone is working you will see a green check-sign appear which means that you are good to go. If your selected microphone wasn’t picking up any sounds you should make sure that it is properly connected to your computer and try again and be sure to make some noise. If it doesn’t work you can try selecting a different microphone.

The recording tool is a rather processor hungry little creature and the audio it records is stored in memory until you upload it or click record again so it is recommended to keep the recording as short as possible. Depending on your computers performance it is possible, but not recommended, to record files up to 10 minutes and longer.

To start recording you press the round record button. The recording tool will count you in and on four you will hear a pinging sound that indicates that the tape is rolling. You can do as many takes as you wish but when you have a recording that you are pleased with you should upload it by clicking the upload button. Once your recording is uploaded it will appear as a file under “Uploaded audio files” where you can preview it the same way the buyer will be able to.

Preview versions

Independent of how you choose to upload your files we will automatically create mp3 preview versions containing a watermark. This watermark is created by inserting very short passages of silence within regular intervals, which allows the buyer to access the quality and match of the audio without being able to access the final full quality version without paying.

Submit your audio

When you have uploaded the file, or multiple files, that contain your audio you can choose to write a message to go with the audio before you submit. In the message you can for instance indicate whether or not you are willing to give another go at the assignment if the seller isn’t pleased with this audio. To submit you simply click the submit button.

Email notifications

Here you can change for what and how often you want to receive email notifications. The notification for new messages is relevant for all users. Notifications for received audio is only relevant for people selling audio, i.e. users that have created an assignment. The sellers can choose to get notified when submitted audio is accepted, submitted audio is declined and when there are new assignments matching the profile.

The default setting for all new users is to be notified directly when something happens. It is possible to change this for a daily or weekly summary. The summaries will contain all relevant activities since you received your last summary. A summary is only sent if there have been activities matching your notification settings.

Matching criteria

Your profile contains the skills set used in the automatic matching with assignments and there are two modes that can be used to widen or narrow the set of matches.

You can also choose to specify the minimum price an assignment must offer in order for it to be considered a match.
